Since several important ideas about Psycholinguistics have been previously explained, we can now define the concept of Psycholinguistics as follows:






Due to the fact that psycholinguistics studies cognitive processes (cognition or mental activities), it is extremely important to understand what cognitive processes are and how they can be classified.

First of all, cognition can be defined as the use or handling of knowledge; therefore, the faculty which permits us to think and reason, and the process involved in thought and reasoning.

According to Carl Jung, the mental activities (he also called them functions, based on the “functions” being performed) can be divided as follows:
